5 Simple and Budget Friendly Decor Refresh Ideas

Looking for a way to bring new life to your spaces without breaking the bank? Fall back in love with your home with these simple decor refresh tips that are easy on the wallet.

1. Shop Your Home

Have the itch to switch? Shop your home before you rush out and buy anything new. Using what you already own is a completely free way to change up your spaces. First, think about the space you want to revamp, this could be a small area like a shelf or an entire room. Get an idea of what you would like to do in this space and what items you could use to make that happen. Then walk around your home and pull pieces you think you could use. Be sure to go through any decor you have stored away. Try some pieces out and see what works. Moving decor around my home is something I do often to prevent myself from growing tired of the pieces I have.

2. Repurpose to Refresh Old Decor

This step involves some thinking outside the box. Instead of looking at a piece of decor for exactly what it is, think of ways you can use that item besides its intended purpose. With a little creativity you can give old decor new life. You can search Pinterest or Instagram for inspiration. Repurposing items adds a unique touch to your decor, so this is a step I like to keep in mind when I am trying to refresh a space. Pitchers can be vases, chunky candle stick holders can be bookends, cake plates or books can be risers just to name a few examples. The possibilities really are endless.

3. Add a Coat of Paint

Painting decor or furniture is a quick and easy way to transform a piece. Virtually anything can be painted if you use the right type of paint and seal when necessary. You can instantly freshen up a worn or dingy piece with a coat of the same paint, or you can completely change the look and feel of it with a new colour.

4. Don’t Love it … Sell it

If you have decor in your home that you don’t love, and the previous steps haven’t changed that, then get rid of it. Selling items through a garage sale or online through places like Facebook Marketplace can be a great option. Doing this allows you to clear space in your home while making some money that you can put towards something you do love. Another option is to swap items with family and friends. You could take unwanted items off their hands in exchange for items you no longer want or need. If all else fails, donate your items to a local thrift store. Some thrift stores even offer coupons in exchange for donations, check in your area for any stores that may do this.

5. Refresh With Thrifted Decor

If you are looking to buy items you don’t already have, thrifting is a great place to start. Shopping second hand will save you lots of money. You can find great gently used pieces at thrift stores, garage sales and online for a fraction of the price you would find them brand new. Tips 2 and 3 of this post can also be used to bring new life to second hand items. New to thrifting? Check out my top 3 tips for thrifting home decor here.

Excellent advise Courtney! I needed the reminder to shop my home! Thrifting is one of my passions and because I love doing it, I probably am not using what I already own enough. Frugality is part of my interior decorating style and shopping the house is frugality at it’s best. Glad we connected!

Thank you so much! Thrifting is one of my passions too, but sometimes I need to remind myself that I might have something at home that works just as well

I find that I can get really bored of decor pieces I have and start to not like them anymore when they’ve been in the same place a while. When really it’s not the piece I don’t like but I just no longer like how I used it. Moving things around helps keep things fresh.

Thank you so much for these tips. We are about to start a big remodel and I am going to have to seriously redecorate the new spaces. I will try to use what we have and definitely get rid of those items I can’t stand to look at. Thrift shops are also a great idea, I don’t know why I never think of that!

These are great ideas! My favorite is repurposing things in your home for another purpose. I also like the idea shopping your home for things before going out and buying something new. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

Shopping your home isn’t nearly as fun as actually shopping, but it prevents me from wasting money on things I don’t really need!

That’s great advice!! I actually never really thought much about repurposing what I already have! I tend to sell it and buy something else, but I’ll definitely be on the lookout to revamp what I already own!!

I love these ideas!! Typically, I sell most of my items, but love the creative idea of repurposing and to give things an extra life. Thanks!
